Mind Chatter – How to Gain Control of the Negative Thoughts
What is mind chatter? It’s funny when I think back to before I started this spiritual journey, I was so self absorbed that I actually thought I was the only one with a conversation playing in my head. I had no idea why ~ what ~ how, I just knew it was annoying and really wished I could quiet the noise. So what is mind chatter? Mind chatter is the negative conversations that we hear playing in our head. Sometimes I can actually have 2 different conversations going on at the same time, even while I’m engaging in yet a third with a real person. It sounds like this, “She doesn’t really want to be here right now, look she’s not even paying attention to what you just said. I really need to go, I’ve got to get to the grocery store to pick up something for dinner. Oh my, I just can’t seem to get everything done that needs attention. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Oh look, I knew she didn’t really want to be here, she just yawned. I love her new haircut, mine always looks so dumpy.” And on and on and on. It’s amazing we can even have an intelligent conversation with all that going on behind the scenes.
When I realized I shared this with all of humanity (what a revelation), I started to study the concept of mind chatter. In the bible ~ 2 Corinthians 10:5 we are taught to take every thought captive. But how are we to do that? When Dr. Phil talks about mind chatter he says that it’s like a tape that gets programed in our subconscious and plays at lightening speed. Sometimes so quickly that we don’t even realize the thought occurred, but yet we can have a physical reaction. What I’ve come to realize ~ although it can be annoying having all that chatter going on, the first step is actually turning up the volume. Again, Dr. Phil says we can’t change what we don’t acknowledge and we can’t acknowledge something if we don’t have clarity.
